Are you generic?

Dear Friends,

When you go to the store to purchase a particular drug do you tend to buy a brand-name or a generic-brand?  We tend to feel mistrustful of anything we deem a “knockoff,” assuming we will end up with a lesser version of the real thing. With “we get what we pay for” a familiar refrain, we learn to associate better quality with a higher price. So when it comes to generic medications, which can cost 50-85% less than their brand-name counterparts, it’s no wonder we may cast a suspicious eye. However, both are tightly controlled by the FDA, ensuring they offer the same safety, quality, results, and have to go through the same clinical tests.

What about when it comes to gender? How do we view humankind?  Frankly, it all depends on your “worldview.”  But what is the correct worldview if indeed there is a correct one? James, a half-brother of the Lord Jesus, says that there are 2 kinds of wisdom – wisdom from above and the wisdom of the world. The wisdom (Sophia) of this world, “is earthly, natural, demonic.  But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, free of hypocrisy.” James 3:15-17

Are you generic? If you looked up the word generic you would find these definitions:

  • Relating to or having the rank of a biological genus
  • Characteristic of a whole group or class
  • Not being or having a particular brand name
  • Having no particularly distinctive quality or application

We have been working our way through 1 Peter and this Sunday we will examine 1 Peter 3:1-6 which focuses on wives and how they are to live in a manner that reflects the image and glory of God in the 1st century male dominated world.

Are wives actually supposed to come under their husband’s authority?  Why aren’t we living in the 21st century?  My title is, “The Wonder of Womanhood!” I understand that there is an actual movie called, “Wonder Woman.”  Does the Hollywood version coincide with the Biblical account?  I hope you will join us for, “church on the grass” at 10:45 am or online.

Fearfully and wonderfully made,
Glen
