Yesterday I talked to my next door neighbor how she felt about last Tuesday’s presidential election. I asked, “Are you rejoicing or weeping?” (She was sad, but not quite weeping.) I had just read Romans 12:15 which says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” In the wake of a very contentious election, there are many in our country, both inside the church and outside, who are strongly on one side or the other. While some are gloating and others are rioting, it’s time for Christians to show that the love of Christ is big enough to unite us, even when we disagree on some things, even important things, like electing our leaders.
What instruction does the Bible give us for post-election activity? Regardless of which candidate was elected, 1 Timothy 2:1,2 says, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” Leadership, especially leadership of a country, is a challenging task that usually stretches those who practice it near, if not past, the breaking point. Innumerable obstacles, tough decisions, temptations, and heartaches await our next president, and that’s why he needs our prayers.
What about leadership within the church? Well, that should be easy since Christians see eye to eye on every issue, never argue, lose their temper, or say things they shouldn’t say! Sigh. Unfortunately we know that’s not true. Leadership in the church can be just as challenging as anywhere else.
Fortunately church leaders have resources to allow us to love and lead in a unique way. As we follow our leader Jesus, He empowers us to lead His people with His wisdom and strength. That same power allows Christ’s people to follow and support their leaders! The writer of the book of Hebrews had VERY strong instructions for both LEADERS and FOLLOWERS – both require God’s power!
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Hebrews 13:17
As important as guiding a country is, those who lead churches have a much higher responsibility and accountability! You’ll notice the writer of Hebrews quickly follows these instructions with an urgent request from his followers. “Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.” (Hebrews 13:18) Leaders need prayer, whether they are presidents or pastors, elected officials or elders!
Many of you pray for me and the other leaders of Valley church on a regular if not daily basis. Thank you! This Sunday I’ll be unwrapping these verses as well as sharing our church vision plan and especially covet your prayers!
In Christ,
Kurt Jones
P.S. We’re having a special celebration for our veterans on Sunday AND some of our veteran Global Partners will be making a special presentation to Valley Church for our support for them. Come and find out more and stay for potluck lunch afterwards!
