Between Iraq and a Hard Place

I recently reconnected with an old friend at the Perspectives class being hosted by Valley Church on Sunday nights. Among other things, Dan Lagasse is a seasoned global worker in nine different countries, an effective missions mobilizer, and an amazing horn player in the Sons of Jubal. On top of that, we’ve been friends for over 40 years! We were both sent out from our home church as missionaries to the Philippines back in the 1980s.

And Dan loves to tell stories that point people to Jesus. His latest book is Scars Tell Stories: From a Cystic Fibrosis and Heart/Double Lung Transplant Patient. Valorie and I were there when Dan and his wife Deanna went through that ordeal.

I also remember when they adopted two girls from Kurdistan who would have died of starvation if they hadn’t intervened. Dan calls that story “Between Iraq and a Hard Place.” And he gives God all the credit for taking them through unbelievably difficult circumstances that stretched their faith to the limit.

This Sunday we’ll see Moses lead the people out of slavery in Egypt, into the wilderness, and right up to the shore of the Red Sea. (Hebrews 11:27-29 and Exodus 5-14.)  I imagine you’ve been there too. Stuck between two very difficult situations where you desperately needed God’s help. As Pharoah’s special forces thundered toward them, Moses told the people then (and God’s people today), “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” Ex. 14:13

In Christ,
Kurt

P.S. This Sunday we will also celebrate the Lord’s Supper in the context of the Passover. Please prepare your hearts to meet with the Lord in a special way during this time.
