The Most Misunderstood Parable?

The parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:30-37 is very familiar to Christians and non-Christians alike. For most people this is a story about being kind to people around you or being a nice person. Even among secular people, someone who does good to strangers is called a “Good Samaritan”. In California “The Good Samaritan law” protects people who help others during emergencies. Three of our kids were born at “Good Samaritan” hospital in San Jose.

But this story is NOT primarily about helping people or being a “good neighbor”. It should be no surprise that most people misunderstand the point of this lesson from Jesus. He said it would happen. Matt. 13:13 says, “Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.”

How is your understanding of this parable? I hope you’ll join us on Sunday to really see and hear the deeper meaning Jesus had in mind. This “puzzle” has a message for all of us today just as it did for those who heard it the first time.

In Christ,
Kurt
