Talk is cheap!

Dear Friends,

Talk is cheap” is an idiom that has been in use since the 1800s, though its exact origin is not known. It is a colloquial expression that means words are easy to say but actions are more important. It suggests that people can make promises or claims, but unless they follow through with them the words are not valuable or meaningful. Years ago, people would say things like “talk is cheap, but it takes money to buy a farm” or “talk is cheap until you hire a lawyer.”

In the mid 80’s I was overseeing the youth ministry in a large church and tasked with hiring a middle school youth pastor. I introduced him and sat down in the back. He picked up his guitar and began to sing these words:

Your walk talks
And your talk talks
But your walk
Talks louder than your talk talks

He was really saying that “talk is cheap.” It is one thing to say something but quite another to back it up and live it out! This Sunday we will examine the life of a man by the name of Enoch whose walk matched his talk.

“By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God. And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him” Heb. 11:5-6

How is your walk? Are you practicing what you are preaching? Our lives bear fruit, but the question is what kind of fruit! Jesus said we would be recognized by our fruit. James, the half-brother of Jesus, stated emphatically that “faith without works is dead.”

Let us live authentic lives by faith in the One who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. God’s will for our lives is to “walk” in the light as He is in the light. Please take a little time and meditate on Heb. 11:5-6 as well as Gen. 5:21-24.

Walking by faith and not by sight,
Glen

P.S. Consider inviting someone to our gathering this Sunday.  Who knows, they might say yes!
