Protecting Your Marriage

Valley Church Family,

We are in the midst of a wonderful series on Family Matters. In the last few weeks, we have been reflecting on God’s design for husbands and wives in marriage. We live in an exceedingly permissive culture in which threats to a Godly marriage are numerous, so in my sermon this week I am going to address the most prevalent threats to marriage: sexual immorality and marital infidelity.

Infidelity is the most common cause of divorce. Current research indicates that both men and women are equally likely to cheat on their spouse, and 42% of divorced individuals reported having more than one affair.

Sexual immorality and marital infidelity are a great tragedy, and can be ruinous to a family. It may come as no surprise then, that the Bible does not shy away from addressing what has always been a serious threat to marriage.

For wisdom and insight into addressing this issue, I will be preaching from Proverbs 5:1-23. We will listen-in to a Godly father instructing his young son on how to protect his marriage as well as how to help it to flourish.

With great insight and wisdom, he instructs his son not only on how to deal with sexual temptation, but also on how to channel his sexual thirst in a truly righteous and fulfilling way. Whether you are single or married, male or female, young or old… temptation to act in a sexual immoral way is a deadly threat. This passage is for all of us.

Warning to parents of young children: This Bible passage uses words and images that are very descriptive and frank. Please read Proverbs 5:1-23 before Sunday. If you are a parent of a young child, please preview the sermon before you decide to allow your child to listen/view to it.

My hope and prayer is that our reflection on this passage will help us all avoid sexual sin, as well as find healing and wholeness in our Savior Jesus Christ.

In His service,

Andy Drake
