Dearly beloved,
There are so many idioms in the English language. I honestly feel sorry for people coming to the US who have to try to decipher what a particular phrase means. Take for example the phrase, “I wash my hands – or I’m washing my hands.” It can mean to:
- Renounce
- Abandon
- Distancing oneself from someone or something
How it is used in a sentence can vary, for example a young person might say, “I’m afraid that if I tell my parents what I’ve done, they will wash their hands of me.”
This expression alludes to Pontius Pilate‘s washing his hands before having Jesus put to death, saying “I am innocent of the blood of this just person” (Matthew 27:24).
We have been told for the last 4 months to wash, wash and wash for at least 20 seconds. Why? So that hopefully we wash all the germs away. However, it isn’t a once for all time wash – no we told to wash several times during the day.
This Sunday we will again focus our minds and hearts on Hebrews 10:19-25. Remember these words, “let us draw hear with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil (guilty) conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” The writer is exhorting the Hebrew Jesus’ followers to remember what has already taken place! They have a conscience which has been cleansed from “dead works to serve the living and true God.”
It is impossible to have “Unshakable Confidence in an Unstable World” if we continue to live under constant condemnation. That is why Satan is called “The accuser of the brethren.” That is his job and he is good at it! Friends, let’s not be ignorant of his schemes! Rather, let us put on the full armor of God so that we can stand firm against him and the spiritual forces of wickedness in the unseen realms. Satan is a defeated foe so let’s not give him any kind of toehold.
Please read the book of Hebrews before Sunday! I also encourage you to read chapter 10 each day. Friends, we are not on a picnic but on the battlefield and there is much more at stake than meets the eye! The soul of every single person.
Join us this Sunday for our online service, our Joel moments, coffee times and other opportunities to connect during these social distancing days. Ever wonder what Jesus would do regarding “social distancing?” I have!
Because perfect love casts our fear,
Glen
P.S. Just a reminder that while we have been (past tense) been washed when we do sin and transgress to keep our fellowship with God to need to confess our sins. Why? Because He and He alone is faithful and just to forgive us our sins! There is only on real Forgiver!
