Are you smart?

How would you fill in the following sentences?

  • Don’t bite the hand that…
  • Where there’s smoke, there’s…
  • A penny saved is…

Even if you don’t know these particular sayings of wisdom, no doubt you grew up hearing things that were like them — practical knowledge summarized in succinct sayings, designed to be helpful and memorable. Wise men and women have been writing down these “gems” and passing them along for centuries. The book of Proverbs is a collection of sayings from King Solomon focusing on imparting understanding that would impact every facet of our lives.

But what is it that sets apart these wise words from those of Buddha, Gandhi, or your grandmother? The key is found in Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”   God’s covenant name “I AM” signifies the source and authority of these words over and above those of mere human origin.

This Sunday we start a new series called “Street Smart: Wisdom for Life from Proverbs”. This series follows on the heels of last week’s message about “Putting off the old person and putting on the new” as part of our 4X4 Disciple series. How do we grow to be more and more like Christ? Out of love for our Savior, we take the practical wisdom of the Bible and put it to work in our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit! In the next several weeks we’ll cover practical subjects that directly apply to our “joyful journey” as disciples of Jesus!

In Him,

Kurt

P.S. We had another fantastic “Second Friday” last night! Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success!
